AT&T National Coverage

If you look at the main section of my website, then you can tell that even though I have a section dedicated to “Sports blogs” – I rarely get the chance to shoot sporting events (seeing that there are all of 3 or 4 blogs in that category). But every year that the PGA tour comes to town, I try to shoot the event held at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda.

One of the last times I shot the event, I was lucky enough to be able to shoot Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo together prior to their split, and also shoot Tiger Woods with Elin Nordgren before she kicked his butt. Both splits resulted in increased sales of images, so I was quite happy! Before you cringe at the thought of me celebrating bad news — lets be clear, this news does not make me happy — but from a sales perspective, it is nice to have recent pictures of the celeb couple when the news hits!

This year when I showed up for the pro-am event held on Wednesday prior to the PGA event, I scrolled thru the list of players, and the only notable name was Donald Trump – whom was just about to finish up his round, so I skipped shooting on Wednesday.

Looking at the weather forecast for the weekend, I knew covering this was going to take just about every ounce of energy I had, as record breaking heat was expected in the area. Thursday was not bad, but Friday was unbelievably hot and miserable. I was lucky enough to have a wedding on Saturday – which turned out to be a little break for me from the rigors of lugging around a ton of camera equipment thru 18 holes each day.

So after my rest, I prepared for another long day on the course on Sunday. Luckily, as the day went on, it became clear that the lead group would be the only ones in contention for the win. Tiger Woods and Bo Van Pelt battled back and forth all day, and of course just about everyone in attendance all week was only really there to see Tiger play – so it was fitting that he ended up winning.

I’ve shot Tiger a number of times now, and I’ve always been surprised by his demeanor. You’d think with all his success, he would be a little nicer and easy going. Instead, he is all business — poker face the entire time. I’m kind of surprised that he has been able to brand himself so well given his lack of personality. Could you imagine how huge he would be if he had the same level of skill, but was actually a nice guy too?

AT&T National Coverage

The last time I covered the AT&T National was before our official Blog existed. Back then, the AT&T National Coverage went out on my small e-mail distribution list and was very well received as it is one of those DC events that everyone is interested in, even if you don’t follow the typical DC news cycle!
Wednesday began with a pro-am tournament which highlighted Tony Romo playing with Tiger Woods, Jessica Simpson singing the National Anthem, and Redskins players and others celebs playing a round with the pros as well. Note to self: It is called Pro-AM for a reason…. The AM part of that means the they play like me…. and as a photographer…. I don’t want to be standing in front of someone that plays like me while they drive a golf ball straight at me
(although they are trying to drive it down the fairway)! Scary— but luckily, I was not hit! 🙂
Having shot this course before, but only having shot Golf a handful of times, I was still a bit nervous about the strict PGA Tour rules– the entire time I couldn’t help but pray to God that my finger did not accidentally slip too early and snap in one of the players back-swings — a very big no-no for us stills.
Luckily for me, my finger kept steady, and my phone did not accidentally go off like it did during Obama’s prime time news conference (even though again, it was on vibrate only). However, all of the photographers didn’t hold their hands as steady as I – on Sunday, at the 16th green, with Tiger putting for birdie to take the lead, one poor soul a few spots down from me accidentally slipped early during Tiger’s swing. Tiger let out a big “SERIOUSLY?” (guess he has been watching Grey’s) and the other stills began sending evil stares at the offender. I think I would have messed myself, as that putt could have easily been the difference between 500,000 and 1,000,000 for Tiger (all of which would be donated to his charity anyway). And of course, the photographers ripped into the offender the rest of the evening — yikes!
